Italy to Test Starlink Satellites to Expand Internet Access in Remote Areas
MILAN, Oct 15 — In a bold move to enhance internet connectivity across the country, Italy is preparing to test satellite technology from Elon Musk’s Starlink to provide high-speed internet services in remote areas. Alessio Butti, Undersecretary to the Prime Minister’s Office, revealed the initiative in an interview with Il Sole 24 Ore ahead of a Group of Seven ministerial meeting on technology and digital issues at Lake Como.
Butti emphasized the government’s commitment to exploring satellite-based solutions to complement existing infrastructure, particularly in regions lacking adequate terrestrial connectivity. “We’re assessing with Starlink and other players the possibility of implementing a space-based service for remote areas or regions without adequate infrastructure,” he stated.
This initiative comes as part of Italy’s broader efforts to ensure that all homes and businesses have access to fixed-line internet speeds of at least 1 Gigabit per second by 2026. This goal is integral to the European Union’s post-pandemic recovery program, which allocated significant funds to improve digital infrastructure throughout member states.
Despite securing 3.4 billion euros (approximately $3.71 billion) in EU funds, Italy has faced challenges in its fiber-optic rollout, with reports indicating that less than a third of the planned network has been completed so far. The government’s collaboration with Starlink is viewed as a potential solution to address the delays and provide a rapid response to the pressing need for enhanced connectivity in underserved areas.
Starlink has already established a presence in Italy, serving over 50,000 customers with its satellite internet services. The technology, which relies on a constellation of low Earth orbit satellites, has been praised for its ability to deliver high-speed internet with low latency, making it a viable option for those in remote regions.
As Italy strives to bridge the digital divide, the integration of satellite technology may play a crucial role in transforming its internet landscape.
