China Launches Military Drills Near Taiwan, Sparking Outrage in Taipei and Alarm in Washington

China has launched large-scale military exercises around Taiwan, escalating tensions in the region and drawing condemnation from Taipei and Washington. The drills, which include live-fire exercises and simulated attacks on Taiwanese targets, are seen as a direct response to recent visits to the island by high-level US officials.

The Chinese military announced the exercises on Monday, saying they were intended to “deter separatist forces” in Taiwan and “safeguard national sovereignty.” The drills are scheduled to last for several days and involve a wide range of military assets, including warships, fighter jets, and ballistic missiles.

Taiwan’s defense ministry condemned the exercises as “provocative and irresponsible” and said they were a violation of Taiwan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Additionally, the ministry charged that China was intimidating Taiwan and undermining regional peace and stability by threatening to use force.

The US State Department expressed concern about the Chinese military exercises and urged Beijing to refrain from actions that could escalate tensions in the region. The US has long-standing security ties with Taiwan and has pledged to defend the island against Chinese aggression.

The Chinese exercises come at a time when tensions between China and Taiwan are at their highest level in decades. In recent months, China has increased its military activity around the island, including conducting regular air patrols and sending warships into the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing-wen, has pledged to protect the island’s sovereignty and accused China of attempting to “subvert” Taiwanese democracy. The US has also stepped up its support for Taiwan, including providing the island with advanced weapons and conducting joint military exercises.

The Chinese military exercises are expected to draw international condemnation and could further strain relations between China and the West. Some analysts have warned that the drills could increase the risk of accidental clashes between Chinese and Taiwanese forces.

In addition to the military exercises, China has also imposed sanctions on several Taiwanese companies and individuals in recent weeks. The sanctions are seen as a form of economic coercion and are intended to pressure Taiwan into accepting Chinese sovereignty.

China’s war games around Taiwan represent a significant escalation in the already tense relations between Beijing, Taipei, and Washington.
