Google Partners with Kairos Power to Launch Nuclear Energy Initiative to Power AI Operations

Mountain View, CA — Alphabet’s Google has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Kairos Power to construct seven small modular nuclear reactors, aiming to generate a total of 500 megawatts of clean nuclear power. This initiative is set to address the increasing energy demands driven by the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) operations, with the first reactor projected to be operational by 2030 and the others to follow by 2035.

In a statement, Michael Terrell, Google’s senior director of energy and climate, highlighted the significance of this collaboration, stating, “This agreement is part of our efforts to develop and commercialize a broad portfolio of advanced clean electricity technologies to power our global data centers and offices.” He emphasized that the initiative would provide “new 24/7 carbon-free power to U.S. electricity grids,” further cementing Google’s commitment to sustainability.

The tech giant’s decision comes amid a growing trend among major companies to invest in nuclear energy as a stable power source. The high energy requirements of AI technologies have prompted firms to seek alternatives to traditional renewable energy, which can be intermittent. Nuclear power offers a reliable solution, capable of delivering continuous energy, crucial for data centers that operate around the clock.

Google’s initiative follows similar moves by other tech leaders. Last month, Microsoft announced a partnership with Constellation Energy to restart Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island Unit 1 nuclear plant. This agreement aims to secure a 20-year supply of electricity for Microsoft’s data centers, showcasing a strategic pivot towards nuclear energy in the tech sector.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has also made strides in this direction, recently acquiring a nuclear-powered data center in Pennsylvania from Talen Energy for $650 million. This trend underscores the recognition among tech companies that nuclear energy is essential for meeting their growing energy needs sustainably.

The reactors being developed by Kairos Power are categorized as small modular reactors (SMRs), designed for flexibility and scalability. These advanced reactors can be manufactured off-site and transported for assembly, potentially reducing construction time and costs while incorporating enhanced safety features.

As AI technologies continue to evolve, the demand for energy is expected to escalate significantly, presenting a unique opportunity for nuclear energy to play a central role in the transition to clean energy.
