The St. John Fisher Women’s basketball team lost a close matchup to Nazareth College on senior day.

With only four teams able to make the conference tournament, the loss is especially significant at this time of year since Nazareth now closes to within one game of the fourth and final spot Fisher is currently in.

The 72-66 defeat drop the Cardinals record to 11-11 overall and 8-5 in the Empire 8. The Golden Flyers record now stands at 11-12, with a 7-7 conference record. Fisher came into the game with a three game winning streak, including a 74-42 blowout of Alfred.

Seniors Maria Kelleher, Emily Piacentini, and McKenzie Bezon were honored during pregame. Despite tearing her ACL in the preseason, Bezon suited for the first time all season. She started and received a ceremonial pass from Piacentini before exiting to a standing ovation.

Leading the Cardinals was Caroline Robertson with 19 points and Emily Piacentini who also had 16 points on the day. Senior Sam Sorge paced the Golden Flyers with 24 points and junior Samantha Peebles also added 20 points.

It was the Golden Flyers’ defense that was eventually able prevail, despite allowing the Cardinals to shoot a respectable 40 percent from the field and 30 percent from the three point line.

Fisher will host Elmira College in its next game on Feb. 15, which is the final home contest of the season. The Cardinals will have three more games, as they prepare for the Empire 8 tournament.
