St. John Fisher’s volleyball team saw its season come to an end on Saturday, Nov. 5. The Cardinals faced a very tough Stevens Institute of Technology team in the Empire 8 semifinals. Stevens had an impressive record coming into the match at 29-4.
The first set went to Stevens 25-15, with Stevens scoring the final three points to secure the win. Each team recorded 11 kills, with Junior Anna Marcy leading the way for Fisher with 6 of them.
The Cardinals stuck around in the second set, however Stevens pulled away during the stretch, winning their second straight set 25-12. Stevens used multiple scoring runs, recording 14 kills. Senior Mary Tobin took charge for Stevens in the second set. Tobin was the 2015 Empire 8 player of the year. Losing two straight sets put Fisher in a must win situation.
Despite Fisher’s best effort in the third set, it was not enough to stop Stevens from advancing into the Empire 8 finals. The match was tied at 18 before Stevens late scoring run propelled them to a 25-20 victory to clinch the victory.
Anna Marcy led Fisher with kills, while junior Katie Mazierski had 3 aces. Stevens went on to lose to Ithaca College in the Empire 8 finals before receiving an at large bid to the NCAA tournament.
